A slightly political rant

There are reasons why I do not talk politics. Not here, not in conversation, not on teh fb. I think people that use teh fb, specifically, to platform are kinda lame. I know, go write a blog. In my opinion, it's really not for the political soap boxing. *ahem* The other day, I had written how I was going to meet Mayor Daley. Then I wrote how cool it was to get to meet him the day he announced he's not running again. Pretty cool. No, not even - pretty monumental. Some people - without even knowing where I stand politically, or more importantly, my thoughts on the mayor - wrote stupid comments on my post. I need to point out here that many of the people who wrote or told me their opinions are NOT EVEN FROM CHICAGO. This means they do not know what the city was like more than 21 years ago. Well guess what - I do. I remember downtown as a place you didn't want to be caught dead in after 5:00, and never on weekends. I remember there was nothing green about this city - literally or ecologically. Sure, say what you want. But don't say it in/on my space. I'm a pretty smart cookie, and mostly fair in healthy debate. I can also admit that Mayor Daley is HUMAN and therefore has made mistakes - outsourced parking meters? Meigs Field? anyone? Bueller? BUT Again, I don't talk politics. People should really know that about me by now, and from this point on, God help the person who decides my space (blog/teh fb) is a good place to unleash. That being said, anyone who wants to meet for some beer and discuss/debate, I'm all in. But you better bring more than yesterday's headlines to back up your bull shit.

OK, meet you at Turner Hall tonight to drink and talk smart and listen to Billy Bragg.

I remember the city 21 years ago... but there's an alcohol haze blurring some of the memories. :)

Yeah, I'm with you on Meigs Field and the parking meters, along with many other things, but I will not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

One only has to walk (yes! I said WALK! Not drive through at racing speeds!)down Clybourne to see the difference.

Congrats on meeting the Mayor, and on such a momentous day.

Z - Alas, I cannot. The tricycle of awesome rides tonight.
Jennifer - I hear you. But I do think if we put all of his stuff on a scale "good stuff done" vs "bad stuff done" the good stuff would way out weigh the bad. again, just my opinion.

I think most measures of success would indicate Chicago after Daley is in far better shape than Chicago before Daley.

I agree with Von--except on one point. Megis field wasn't a mistake. I think it was sneaky, underhanded and beautiful.

Ignore the changes downtown for a moment. I'm not saying these are not important developments. They are indeed a huge push forward. But if you want to see how much good Daley did do, check out Stony Island. 10 years ago, when I started as PO, Stony Island was as much a war zone as Terror Town. Today it is pretty damn peaceful. It is also absolutely gorgeous.

kidding, anyway. Besides, the Vortex of Shenanigans would have a conniption.

Brando - true, so true. YOu can stay!
TheMarty - thanks, and good point. He did many MANY great things.
Z - the vortex would not care if you and I hung out solo....I don't think...

I think the big problem is that the phrase "Chicago Style Politics" is being bandied about by ignorant out-of-state mofos who want to criticism the president.

Well, the same out-of-state mofos are always going on about "New York Liberals" as well.

Here's a hearty "Shaddup!" to all of them!

That is one excellent line, Von!

It is hard to know how much credit to give to politicians. I want to believe not that much since NYC went through a similar transformation under Guiliani and I hate that guy.

Fish - catching up on your VFN reading? I noticed a few comments from you around here today.
Thanks for stopping by!
I do have to say, though, that even the Daley haters can admit there have been obvious improvements to Chicago in the 21 years of Daley's leadership.

Big brother won't let me read VFN at work (where I do all my reading).
Must be the colorful language you use. BTW, no problems with me visiting CJATSD so either you are worse than Brando, or they think circle jerks are of general interest at work.

Thank you boy.
